The Toronto Raptors are yet another team interested in Orlando Magic’s Arron Afflalo, who is recording a career-season up to now. The Raptors have been very active during the past few months. After trading away two major stars, Andrea Bargnani and Rudy Gay, they are now exploring the possibility of trading for Afflalo.
Of course, the Orlando Magic have already received a bunch of requests from teams around the league regarding the 28-year old guard, but the Toronto Raptors dynamically enter the mix of teams interested.
Should such a deal be agreed, the Raptors would give away their second-year guard Terrence Ross. As reported, the Magic value Ross very high and apparently they would be very interested in acquiring him. Nonetheless, Orlando seems to be more interested in trading away Jameer Nelson and Glen Davis instead of Afflalo at the moment. Of course, the Magic won’t decline a trade for Afflalo if they see that the right exchange is offered.
Terrence Ross, who was selected as the eighth overall pick in the 2012 draft, is averaging 9.3 points this season to go along with 2.9 rebounds and 43.0 percent shooting from the field. On the other hand, Afflalo is clearly putting up way bigger numbers. He is averaging 20.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest and he is also shooting 47.1 percent from the floor and 41.9 percent from three-point range. It’s obvious that despite Ross’s potential, the Raptors would have to sweeten the pot for this deal to get sealed.
The Raptors’ GM, Masai Ujiri knows Arron Afflalo very well. The two of them spent some time together in Denver as members of the Nuggets, from different positions each, of course.
One very tempting fact around Ross is that he has a low contract, in comparison to his potential and his production. He is in the books for $2.7 million this season and also $2.8 million for the 2014-2015 one. Ross is a player who is considered to have great potential. For a team that in a heavy rebuilding process like the Orlando Magic, Terrence Ross would be a significant asset.
On the other hand, the Raptors could use Arron Afflalo as their next franchise leader. He could form a very powerful duo with DeMar Derozan, although there might be some complications if the two of them are together on the floor simultaneously.
This deal seems like a potent one, but there might also be some alterations. Since the Magic want to trade away Nelson and Davis, too, maybe the two sides find a way so that the Raptors acquire Afflalo together with one of the other two Magic players. Then they could form a tempting package to offer to Orlando, which could also include point guard Kyle Lowry, who is considered as one of Toronto’s most valuable assets currently. Lowry’s value is currently very high, as he is recording a very good season and there are lots of rumors mentioning a potential trade the Raptors would initiate around him.
