Latest news on Omer Asik
The Houston Rockets have been searching for a way to trade away Omer Asik for quite some time now. After it became obvious that Asik simply couldn’t fit alongside Dwight Howard, for a bunch of reasons, the Rockets put their 7-footer center out of Turkey available in the market.
According to multiple reports, several teams were interested in a potential trade. The Rockets explored any scenario, but their asking price was reportedly too high. There was simply no team that was willing to give away as much as Houston demanded for a player of the caliber of Omer Asik.
Although Asik is a big body, a good defender and can also produce on offense, he clearly ranks amongst the mediocre centers in the league. He has lots of flaws in his game. Especially on the offensive end, he isn’t very crafty, he has little athletic abilities and he is also slow.
One thing that makes the potential teams-destinations think twice before agreeing on a deal for Asik is his very expensive salary for the 2014-2015 season. The 27-year old center is in the books for $14.7 million next season, which can be considered too high, in comparison to his quality and production.
Asik finished the previous season with the Rockets averaging 10.1 points per game to go along with 11.7 rebounds and 1.1 block. He also shot 54.1 percent from the floor while playing 30 minutes per game. Asik was the starting center for the Rockets in all 82 games of the season.
Now, the Houston Rockets seem like they will reconsider moving their center out of Turkey. Asik made clear that he had no intention playing behind Dwight Howard neither along his side. A few games into the 2013-2014 season it became obvious that Asik and Howard couldn’t match together. Despite the efforts from Head Coach Kevin McHale, the two of them just couldn’t work in sync. Both Howard and Asik are players who clog the paint. Their offensive game is limited to a range within a few feet from the basket.
Now, Houston might have to re-consider its tactics when it comes to asking for a trade. It seems like the exchange they wanted was too much for what the 7-footer has to offer. Several teams were interested and they might continue to show interest in acquiring Asik. The Boston Celtics, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Portland Trail Blazers are rumored to be the strongest suitors.
There were even some talks that the Celtics were considering a trade that would involve Rajon Rondo, however this scenario seems unlikely. A potential trade that would include Brandon Bass and Courtney Lee would be a more realistic scenario, if the Rockets traded Asik to the C’s.
Now, the Houston Rockets will most probably wait a few days or weeks before deciding to pull the trigger. For sure they will have to re-examine all the offers that are on the table. Omer Asik’s time with the team is clearly over. Now, it’s all about getting the most out of his trade.
